What is MAPEL?
The Michigan Association of Professors of Educational Leadership (MAPEL), formerly the Michigan Association of Professors of Educational Administration, was founded in 1977 by a small group of professors at Michigan universities who prepared school administrators through state licensing programs. MAPEL was initially affiliated with Michigan Congress of School Administrator Associations and coordinated with the Michigan Department of Education on state requirements for school administrator certification. Today, MAPEL represents 15 member organizations with 66 individual faculty who prepare and develop current and future school and district leaders.
The purpose of MAPEL is to promote the advancement of the profession of Educational Administration and Leadership in Michigan through:
MISSION:
To advance the educational leadership profession and support the professional growth of
professors of educational administration in the state of Michigan.
VISION:
Michigan will have a system of high-quality, diverse, and robust educational leadership
preparation, credentialing, and development programs that lead to an improved PK-12
school system.
GOALS:
The goals of MAPEL are as follows:
In order to advance the field of educational leadership and leadership preparation, association members will engage in various activities and task forces, which include:
INTERNATIONAL/NATIONAL AFFILIATES & STATE PARTICIPATION
MAPEL serves as a member affiliate to the International Council of Professors of Educational Leadership (ICPEL).
It also participates in professional and lay education associations including the Michigan Congress, Michigan Education Association (MEA), ATF Michigan, Parent-Teacher Association, Michigan School Business Officials (MSBO), Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB), the Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association (MEMPSA), Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP), Michigan Association of School Administrators (MASA), and the Michigan ASCD.

The purpose of MAPEL is to promote the advancement of the profession of Educational Administration and Leadership in Michigan through:
- Consideration of practices related to selection, preparation, certification, and in-service education of administrators.
- Coordinate with the Michigan Department of Education for the development, establishment, and revision of state standards, in addition to the implementation of accreditation.
- Cooperation with other agencies, associations, and organizations in the State concerned with the improvement of educational leadership, legislation, and other matters pertinent to quality education.
- Stimulation of research projects related to educational administration.
- Communication among institutions of higher learning and with administrators about existing programs and plans relating to the improvement of educational administration.

- Promote and advance the work and research of faculty members and students involved in the field of educational leadership;
- Serve as a vehicle to generate and share ideas about programs, curricula, and teaching methodologies of educational leadership;
- Provide opportunities to learn about and contribute to contemporary issues and policy initiatives from a variety of resources, including but not limited to: colleagues, fellow institutions of higher education, local, state and federal agencies, educational professional associations and organizations, business and community entities;
- Serve as the organization that assures that the educational administration professorate has a voice in important policy development and decision-making across Michigan that affects the work of the faculty and students involved in educational leadership preparation; and
- Engage in activities that impact the field of educational administration and leadership preparation, credentialing, and development, through legislative involvement, policy development, and state-wide advocacy.
